The #@*!#*! office copier turns 50
Source: CNN.COM
|
|
It may be the most iconic piece of office equipment of the past half-century.
It has saved workers countless hours, spit out forests worth of documents, been cursed by anyone who's faced a paper jam on deadline and been used by office pranksters to copy body parts.
It's been immortalized in pop culture by Rob Schneider's "Saturday Night Live" skits -- "Ran-dyyy! The Rand-man! Randatollah! Making copies!" -- and by the secretaries of "Mad Men," who greet the 1962 arrival of the exotic new machine like a curiosity from another planet.
It's that aging plow horse of the workplace -- the much-used, much-maligned office copier, and it's 50 years old.

Butt seriously, copier paper turns into toilet rolls
Source: NEWS.CNET.COM
|
|
Never thought I'd see the day when I would be wiping my rear with used copier paper straight from an office machine. Butt seriously, thanks to Japanese ingenuity, this could soon be smart waste management, employed in corporate buildings to recycle all that paper we're guilty of overusing into toilet paper.
There's just one wee catch. Nakabayashi's pricey $95,000 office machine requires a whopping 72kg of discarded paper (159 pounds, or about 1,800 A4 sheets) to churn into just two rolls of (hopefully pliable) loo paper. At least you can now say you've cleaned your behind with your boss' memo.

Disastrous Times for the Copier Industry?
Source: OPENPR.COM
|
|
British companies selling and leasing Japanese manufactured goods have been forced to up their prices after negative GBP to Euro and Euro to Yen exchange rate trends worsen, forcing an increase in cost prices.
The GBP to Euro and Euro to Yen exchange rate has been causing serious problems for British companies purchasing Japanese manufactured products over recent months. A large majority of office photocopier and multifunctional device brands are manufactured in Japan, including, Ricoh, Fuji Xerox, Sharp, Konica Minolta, Kyocera Mita, Panasonic, Toshiba and Canon. Taking Canon as an example, it can be shown how much these exchange rates can affect photocopier costs.

Would you like a loan with that copier?

With banks turning off the spigots, Hewlett-Packard Co. is getting used to playing a bigger role as financier to smaller tech companies scrambling for cash to buy its products.
As the turmoil in the capital markets continues and the uncertainty of recession looms, a growing number of technology titans are finding their own internal leasing and financing programs are in hot demand.
"We're one of only a couple of players in the industry that actually owns and writes our own paper," said Geoff Kereluik, vice-president of marketing for HP Canada Co. "That gives us a tremendous amount of latitude in terms of how much risk we ultimately want to take on. ... We expect that there will be a greater uptake in our various leasing offerings."
But for every company like HP that finds itself in the enviable position of having both cash on hand and the ability to offer vendor financing, there are many others that wish they were in a position to take advantage of the opportunities being presented by the tight credit markets.

$10M Detroit copier contract probed
Source: DETNEWS.COM
|
|
The administration of former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and the Detroit City Council gave a $10 million photocopier contract to a former Democratic state House colleague of Kilpatrick's who is not authorized to sell or service the copiers involved, city records and interviews show.
Today, Councilman Kwame Kenyatta will ask Mayor Kenneth Cockrel Jr. and the City Council to rescind the contract awarded last June to Olive Delivery Service LLC, owned by former state Rep. Ken Daniels, D-Detroit.
"We've got a lot of cleaning up to do," after the resignation of Kilpatrick following his guilty plea to felony obstruction of justice charges, Kenyatta said in an interview Wednesday.
"This was a bogus contract from the very beginning, to help your friends out."

Copier company gets the green tick
Source: NZHERALD.CO.NZ

Colouring the company green is nothing new for printer and copier-maker Fuji Xerox.
Last year, the company was accredited to use the Ecolabelling Trust environmental tick on some of its products. But Fuji Xerox New Zealand managing director Neil Whittaker says the company was conscious of environmental issues long before that.
"Fuji Xerox has always been concerned with environmental sustainability and now we are taking it a step further to obtain credits which illustrates our commitment to the environment," Whittaker says.
The environmental tick is a voluntary labelling programme initiated by the Government, recognising steps manufacturers have taken to reduce the environmental impact of their products.

Copier caused Pleasant Grove church fire
Source: THETIMESNEWS.COM

A malfunctioning copy machine was the cause of a fire that damaged Long's Chapel Christian Church on N.C. 49 late Monday.
Alamance County Fire Marshal J.B. Brown spent part of Tuesday investigating the blaze that was confined to the office area in the church. The sanctuary and other areas of Long's Chapel were damaged by smoke.
"Once we got in and suppressed the fire, we could see it originated where the copier is," Brown said.
The copier's sorting mechanism malfunctioned, igniting the fire, he said.

Assembly copier a rodent refuge
Source: ADN.COM

Anchorage city clerk Barbara Gruenstein is keeping score.
Copy machine: 1. Mice: 0.
That's the tally after a repairman recently found chewed wires and rodent droppings when fixing the Anchorage Assembly's copy machine on the ground floor of the Loussac Library.
The machine -- used to print copies of proposed laws, amendments and memos for city leaders -- had been sluggish for some non-mouse-related reason. It sits in a tiny room hidden from the public, just outside the Assembly chambers.
