Brother MFC-250C Inkjet All-in-One
Source: TRUSTEDREVIEWS.COM

An all-in-one printer for under £55 has a head-start in the value stakes before the flag drops. Brother has a range of them and the MFC-150C appears to have a good specification for the home or smaller SOHO customer. But as we know when looking at printers, specs rarely tell the whole story.

Like many of Brother's other all-in-ones, this squat box with its gently sloping top panel looks more like a fax machine than a printer. Coloured in cream and pale grey, it does its best to look like this year's model, but is hampered by actually looking like previous models from at least the last three years.

Its all-plastic, slide-in paper tray takes up to 100 sheets of plain A4 paper, though you have to remove this to print photos, using the same tray to take A4 or 15 x 10cm photo blanks. The tray slides well into the depths of the machine, so there's little tray projecting from the front, other than a pull-out paper stop.

Epson Stylus Photo PX700W printer
Source: POCKET-LINT.CO.UK

It takes around 10 minutes to setup the extremely stylish-looking PX700W, once it’s freed from its box; following the step-by-step approach to set-up makes it very easy to do and follow, making getting the thing going and connected very user friendly indeed. Although the plethora of buttons on the front that form the main control panel is a tad daunting at first.

Once up and running the PX700W has a basket full of features within its squared-off shiny-looking bodywork, so there’s plenty for you to play with, including Wi-Fi support for wireless, borderless A4 printing and individual ink tanks for more economical output as you need only replace the colour ink that has run out.

Printer pick of the year: The HP C6380 All-in-One
Source: FREEP.COM

The printer I'm recommending this year is the HP Photosmart C6380. For my home and home office printing, it has set a new standard in price, convenience and quality.

It lists for $246, but can be found online for as little as $159, making it one of the best priced all-in-one copier, photo printer, scanner and printer I've yet to try. It doesn't have a fax machine, like some of the earlier all-in-one models.

The C6380 makes up for that by printing 4 x 6 photos in lab quality in as little as 18 seconds and for regular printing, it spits out crisp near laser-like quality black print at up to 33 pages per minute in draft mode. Color mode is almost as fast, at 31 ppm.

But what has won me over to this model is the ease by which it can be wirelessly networked to a home network. By simply loading the software, I had two Mac desktops, a Windows desktop and two Mac notebook computers connected to it in no time.

Brother DCP-6690CW multifunction photo printer and scanner
Source: COMPUTERACTIVE.CO.UK

The Brother DCP-6690CW is a multifunction device so it includes a scanner, copier and printer, but its important feature is that it can do all that on A3-size paper.

The scanner and sheet feeder are at the top, while the printer feeds and outputs paper from the front. There's a large touch-sensitive colour screen on the front that can be used to preview photographs from connected cameras or memory cards.

It's a big printer, but considering the size of paper it takes it's surprisingly compact, measuring 54cm across the front. It can connect to both wired and wireless networks so you could stash it in a cupboard, rather than cluttering up other rooms.

Epson Stylus Photo PX800FW All-In-One Photo Printer
Source: TRUSTEDREVIEWS.COM

Making a photo inkjet printer into an all-in-one could be a fairly mundane adaptation, but Epson has decided to use the opportunity for a design rethink in producing the Stylus Photo PX800FW. Although aimed primarily at the six-ink photo enthusiast market, it includes useful business features, such as the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) and CD/DVD tray.

This is an all-in-one machine with attitude, from its low-profile, black exterior to its long, wide touch panel, which hinges out for control. The gentle slope of the black plastic cover rises and falls as you open the ADF in a neat, if slightly creaky, way.

Brother MFC-7320 laser multi-function printer/scanner
Source: COMPUTERACTIVE.CO.UK

We're big fans of laser printers: if you don't want to print photos, they're fast, efficient and cheap.

The Brother MFC-7320 combines a black and white A4 laser printer with scanner, copier and fax machine.

It's solidly built, though not too heavy, and it's quite compact, being only a touch bigger than the average single-function laser printer. The scanner section is at the top, along with the document feeder for a small stack of paper to be scanned or copied. A section below contains the paper output from the printer, and it lifts up to allow jams to be cleared.

Below that is the paper tray – a proper paper tray as opposed to the flimsy units many cheaper laser printers use. There's a monochrome status screen on the front that relates to all the functions, and the buttons are easy to understand. They're also made of a hardy rubber, which means they'll last.
