What to Look For in Your Next Color Laser Printer
Source: PCWORLD.COM

If you're looking to outfit your business with a new printer, now is a great time to buy a color laser. Whether you're a single user who prints newsletters at home or you're buying for a corporate marketing department that designs collateral materials, you're in a buyer's market. Color laser printers are becoming progressively faster, smaller, and cheaper to operate than ever before, and with prices starting at $300, they're affordable for all budgets.

The lowest-end (sub-$500) color laser printers, while incredibly affordable, are typically slow and have limited paper capacity--and they aren't cheap to operate, due to the relatively high cost of consumables. Printers in the $500-to-$1000 range are faster, handle more paper and different paper sizes, and cost less to maintain than inexpensive models. If you're prepared to pay over $1000, the sky's the limit: You'll find printers with workhorse print speeds, large-capacity paper trays, lower costs per page, and sophisticated paper options. Here are a few key features to consider when looking for a color laser that will work best for your business.

Hewlett-Packard's Strong Q3 Results Not Shared in Printer Division
Source: REDORBIT.COM

Hewlett-Packard's (NYSE:HPQ) stronger-than-expected third- quarter performance may have helped lead a rally on Wall Street Wednesday, but its earnings report released Tuesday revealed a decline in its imaging and printing business. While the company reported revenue of $28 billion, up 10 percent year-over-year, its Boise-based imaging and printing division - traditionally accounting for about 27 percent of HP's revenue - experienced a 14 percent decline.

In an investor call on Tuesday, CFO Cathie Lesjak said that consumer printer hardware units were flat and commercial printer hardware units were down 9 percent year-on-year.

"Within IPG (Imaging and Printing Group) we are focused on reducing our cost with ongoing initiatives to improve supply chain efficiency and lower product costs," she said. "We are investing these savings in targeted growth areas including the enterprise and graphic arts. We will continue to be prudent in our pursuit of lower end units and will balance growth and profitability to drive long- term results."

Adding Up Those Toner Cartridges
Source: RECYCLE.CO.UK

Research shows that millions of used ink and toner cartridges are tossed away each year, falling victim to an end of life cycle in a landfill or incinerator. While many groups are attempting to increase consumer awareness, it doesn’t always seem that the message is getting through. If this is the case with you, consider these facts supplied by the recycling group eCycle:

* This year, only 20% of these petroleum-based, plastic cartridges will be recycled. The remaining 80% will ultimately end up in landfill.

* The average used toner cartridge weighs about 3 lbs. It is composed of 40% plastic, 40% percent metal and 20% other materials. The plastic is made of engineering-grade polymers which take over 1,000 years to decompose. 97% of these combined components can be recycled or reused.

* Three quarts of oil are used in the production of every toner cartridge and 2 ounces of oil are used for the production every inkjet cartridge.

* The recovery and reuse of empty printer cartridges diverts millions of cubic feet of material from waste disposal, saving us the millions of tax dollars needed to pay for additional landfill management.

* One school can use 350 printer cartridges per year.

* Each student will use a minimum of 6 to 10 inkjet cartridges per year.

* A medium-sized business can use 900 to 1,600 cartridges per year.

Amazing, isn’t it? The next time you are tempted to toss away an empty cartridge, think about this list and do the right thing. Recycle!

Kyocera Mita FS-1118MFP Laser MFP
Source: TRUSTEDREVIEWS.COM

Multifunction laser printers are all the rage and it’s a pretty simple move to stick an A4 flatbed scanner on top of an existing mono laser printer to produce one. With a bit of fresh tooling to produce a different case design and the firmware to handle the scan and copy functions, companies can charge a premium for the extra functionality in the new device. Kyocera Mita has a range of multifunction machines, based on a similar engine to its FS-1030 laser printer, and the entry-level model is the FS-1118MFP.

Don’t be fooled by the number of pictures of this machine with an Automatic Document Feed (ADF) on top of its scanner. While this is an option, you have to pay extra for the FS-1118MFPDF, or upgrade with the DP-100 Document Processor, to get it. The basic machine has a simple cover for its A4 flatbed.
