HP reincarnate old ink cartridges as key part for new printer
Source: BLOGS.ZDNET.COM
|
|
Here’s a fun use for discarded ink cartridges: turn them into the printhead of a new printer.
That’s what Hewlett-Packard has done with its HP Photosmart D5460. The printhead of the new product is made up of 55 percent recycled PET plastic, which is made out of ink cartridges collected as part of the HP Planet Partners program. The D5460 also comes with a pretty cool software feature called Smart Web Printing that lets you adjust pages you’re printing from the Internet so that you can define exactly what you want and don’t want up printing all sorts of extra pages with extraneous content on them (like banner adds and navigation bars that you can’t use on paper anyway).

Kyocera Mita FS-1300D Mono Laser Printer
Source: TRUSTEDREVIEWS.COM
|
|
Kyocera Mita is a very focussed company. It doesn’t make inkjet printers and it doesn’t bother itself much about the consumer market. It makes laser devices, pure and simple, from small, one-per-desk devices to huge, floor-standing departmental printers. Much closer to the one-per-desk end of the market is the FS-1300D. This printer is similar to the FS-1100 and would suit a SOHO or small workgroup environment.
Decked out in cream and dark grey, this is a modestly sized machine, a bit deeper than some personal lasers, but low to the desk and still with both a 250-sheet paper tray and a 50-sheet multi-purpose tray, which folds down from the front panel.

Toner Cartridges Use Soy-based Oil
Source: GRAPHICARTSONLINE.COM

|
PRC Technologies, a division of Print Recovery Concepts Inc., announced today an environmental breakthrough in printing for offices, public schools and colleges. This summer, PRC will offer the first laser printer cartridges using toner powder derived from soybeans. PRC reports they will supply cartridges for the most popular laser printers under the ( SEE THIS) brand at prices comparable to brand name versions currently available. Soy ink has been available for some time but this is the first soy toner cartridge for laser printers.
Debe Overhaug, president of Print Recovery Concepts, reports a printer cartridge contains one pound of toner powder and that U.S. businesses, schools, institutions and governments consume over 100 million cartridges per year. "That means the United States consumes as much as 50,000 tons of petroleum-based toner powder each year. Now every office employee can help reduce dependence on oil every time they put a toner cartridge in their printer," Overhaug says.
